Poverty throughout Israel is estimated to impact nearly 22 percent of the general population. Among countries listed as economically developed, the poverty-stricken in Israel are among the highest percentage. It is estimated that about 8 percent of employed adults work in professions requiring some technical expertise. The poor in Israel are largely identified as ultra-Orthodox, Arab and Palestinian residents; Jewish citizens number under 15 percent.
Charitable Donations
There are numerous charities sharing the common goal to address the issue of poverty among the poor in Israel. Donations help address what is termed nutritional insecurity, donations instill hope among recipients, donations go toward minimizing the ongoing cycle of poverty and allow the poor in Israel to live with dignity.


Holiday Food and Provisions
One of the largest non-governmental organizations assisting the poor in Israel is, Latet. This organization partners with other like-minded charities to distribute nearly 3,500 food boxes monthly, and provide food vouchers for the Jewish holidays. An estimated 8,000 food vouchers were distributed from the Holiday Fund by Latet. Annual donations are estimated at $3 million. Hundreds of volunteers aid in the success of Latet. This organization also operates a jobs training program to help the poor in Israel establish a trade, or earn a degree in a practical area. Donations for this program can be one-time, sponsorship of a candidate or go toward tuition costs.
The Disabled and Their Families
One other program, Shalva, assists over 2,000 persons with known disabilities who are also among the impoverished in Israel. Headquarters in Jerusalem, Shalva aids in providing over 1,300 hours of therapy annually, rehabilitation, vocational counseling, inclusive education and support to the disabled and their families. The Ministries of Health and Education in Israel have recognized Shalva for its qualitative service to recipients.
